Are you perhaps overpaying for Internet connectivity at ETH?
New SSID eth-5
Choose the new SSID eth-5 at ETH Zurich.
VPN stands for «Virtual Private Network». The VPN client is software that allows an encrypted, secure and authenticated connection from remote locations to the ETH network. Once the connection is established, you get an ETH Zurich IP address.
Many ETH services do not recognize users with an Internet provider other than the ETHZ (e.g. Cablecom) as ETH members and therefore deny them access. With a VPN tunnel they are allocated an ETH internal address and are thus accepted by these services. VPN appearance is similar to dialup service.
As the name «Virtual Private Network» implies, VPN is used to build a private, secure network through a medium like Internet. With VPN, Internet can be used for point to point connections like dial-up or for land line connections.
ITS Data Communication maintains a VPN server infrastructure for docking and off-campus access.
Basically there are 2 user groups:
An encrypted connection requires the installation of some additional software. Users of the old infrastructure (IPsec) can find old software packages at IDES.
For problems with authentication, please contact our Service Desk or your ISG.
